What is lactulose rectal solution? (Back to top)
LACTULOSE (Cephulac®) is a complex sugar-like laxative derived from lactose. It helps to reverse hepatic (liver) coma in portal-system encephalopathy (brain disorders that result from liver disease). Generic lactulose rectal solution is available.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top)
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
•diabetes
•need a galactose-free diet
•scheduled for surgery
•an unusual or allergic reaction to lactulose, other sugars, medicines, foods, dyes or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine? (Back to top)
Lactulose may be given as a retention enema to patients who are unable to take the medication orally (for example, those in a coma). Lactulose syrup must be diluted with a salt solution before being used rectally. For home use make sure your prescriber or health care professional explain how to mix and deliver the medication and provide you with the necessary supplies. For best results, try to keep the solution in as long as possible. Wash hands thoroughly after use.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

Elderly patients over 65 years old need smaller doses to reduce possible side effects.

This does not apply.

•antacids

These can affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
•belching, flatulence
•diarrhea
•nausea or vomiting
•stomach pain or discomfort

What should I watch for while taking lactulose? (Back to top)
Lactulose may not produce any result for between 24 and 48 hours. Do not use lactulose for more than one week unless your prescriber or health care professional has prescribed a regular schedule for you.

Drink several glasses of water a day while you are using lactulose.

Where can I keep my medicine? (Back to top)
Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Throw away if solution becomes dark or cloudy, which may be caused by high storage temperature. Too low storage temperature may make the product difficult to pour.
